What Drives Your Life? That is the topic for Day 3 of the book. This chapter explains that there are several aspects that drives our lives. These could be money, problem, memory, pressure, and fear. However, our lives are commonly driven by:
- Guilt
- Resentment/anger
- Fear
- Materialism
- Need for approval
This is a good chapter because we can analyze our self and see which of these are driving our lives. To be honest, I was driven by some and maybe all of these "drives". Guilt, for example plays an important role on how we see or shape our future. If we choose to linger and remember our past, then we can't move on and shape a better future for our selves because we are still bound to our past. Remembering our guilt only hurt our self and our future. Therefore, what we need to do is turn around from our past and start walking towards a brighter future. One way to do this is to go to confession. I have done this before and I felt so relieved and felt like a burden has been lifted from my shoulder. Everything is clear and it felt good.
What happiness for those whose guilt has been forgiven....What relief for those who have confessed their sins and God has cleared their record. -Psalm 32:1-
Others are driven by their resentment and anger. This also has something to do with our past. This occurs when we hold on to our hurts. Some people often remember the painful things that others have done to them and they keep holding on to this by remembering the painful event over and over again. This only hurts yourself because you are only hurting yourself by choosing to remember these painful events. The wrongdoers can only hurt you once but we can hurt our self several times by holding on to this painful or hurtful memories/event. Similar to guilt, we need to let go of these painful moments so that we can learn from it and move on. One way we can achieve this is by forgiving the person who've hurt us. This is a hard thing to do however, it is essential for us to move on.
Others are driven by fear. Our fears are often caused by a traumatizing experience, unrealistic expectation, high controlled home, and even our own genetic predisposition. Our fears can cause us to miss great opportunities that God has shown/provided to us. We can't be a prisoner of our own fear, it doesn't seem right. However, we have an awesome God that can help us overcome any fear so that we can seek and accept the wonderful opportunities God has given to us. For me, if I didn't overcome my fear of talking to a girl and overcome my quietness and shyness, i wouldn't be in a relationship with my wonderful girlfriend Inez =D
We may also driven by materialism where we desire to acquire many things, sometimes things that we don't even really need. Some people may think that acquiring more things will lead to happiness however, materialism only provide temporary happiness. True happiness and peace can only be found through God.
So what suppose to be our drive in life then? In my opinion, our drive should be establishing a personal relationship with God and separate ourselves from the drive mentioned above. Only then, we will be able to see what God wants us to do in our life, our purpose. Knowing our purpose will simplify our life and prepare for eternal life with God.
